UCU strikes called off

The strike action planned to take place on 25th Feb, 2nd and 4th March has been called off by a meeting of the Leeds uni UCU. The decision was taken after securing significant concessions over negotiation procedures from university bosses.

However, management have given no guarantee against compulsory redundancies after the review period – only that they will not continue their disgraceful practice of sacking people while sitting in talks with the Unions.

The struggle continues for students and staff to continue building practical solidarity and broadening out the Leeds Against Cuts group into a mass campaign that can organise enough numbers effectively to stop the £35m cuts completely.

Students and staff say that we will not pay for the capitalist crisis with our education. We will use the 4-week extension of UCU’s strike mandate to escalate the anti-cuts campaign and pile pressure on the management to halt all plans for redundancies, and cuts to courses and support staff – including the librarians who face being replaced by machines.
